๐Ÿก Main Squeeze: Zoraโ€™s Home Is Safe. But It Still Needs Help.

The house where Zora Neale Hurston spent her final years in Fort Pierce has been saved from demolition. Now comes the harder part, turning it into something that lasts.

TLDR: Zoraโ€™s home in the Lincoln Park neighborhood (where I went to middle and high school) was recently bought and preserved by The Conservation Fund, who feared it might be lost to development. Itโ€™s now been transferred to the Zora Neale Hurston Florida Education Foundation, which hopes to restore it and open it as a visitor and education center. But they need help funding repairs and upgrades.

๐Ÿ“ Why It Matters to Fort Pierce: Zora Neale Hurston is buried here. She lived here. She wrote here. This is one of the only places in the country where her physical legacy still stands. And for decades, the house sat in danger of being erased.

Her old column in the Fort Pierce Chronicle. Her time walking these blocks. All of that started right here on this street.

๐Ÿ›  Whatโ€™s Next: The home still needs major improvements. The Foundation is raising funds not just to repair it, but to transform it into a community learning space that honors Zoraโ€™s life and work. Theyโ€™re not asking for permission. They just need support.

๐Ÿ—ฃ What They Said: โ€œDespite its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1991, this home was at risk of being forgotten,โ€ said Lauren Day, Florida Director of The Conservation Fund. โ€œWe are thrilled to help ensure Zoraโ€™s important legacy alongside our partners.โ€
