🟠 Main Squeeze: Tradition Lakes K-8 is pushing its first day back to August 17th

A lot of people in my life are educators, specifically educators here in St. Lucie County. And anyone who knows a teacher knows exactly what this time of year looks like. Hanging the posterboards, cutting the construction paper, lining the borders. So when I heard through the grapevine that Tradition Lakes K-8 was not going to be ready for a Monday August 10th start, I honestly was not shocked 📚.
Superintendent Dr. Jon Prince made it official Thursday.
The update: First day of school for Tradition Lakes K-8 moves to August 17th, one week later than planned.
Why: Prince inspected the school himself and said staff did not have enough time to prepare it the right way. "Our families have waited a long time for this school and Tradition Lakes students deserve the very best we can give them. I am not willing to hand them anything less on their very first day."
Open House: Friday August 14th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Meet teachers and walk the campus before day one.
Childcare: The district says it will share community childcare options for families who need coverage the week of August 10th.
Everything else: All other St. Lucie Public Schools still open August 10th as planned 📅.
📰 Press Round: Boardwalks, Ballots & Baseball Fields

🏖️ Vero Beach Seeks $1.6 Million to Rebuild Humiston Boardwalk
Vero Beach is closer to rebuilding the Humiston Beach boardwalk destroyed by Hurricane Nicole four years ago. The current estimate is $4.7 million with $3.1 million already raised. The city hopes to begin construction in November pending a $1.6 million fundraising push. A newly established committee will seek donors and recognize contributors. Beach access has dropped significantly since the boardwalk's destruction.

🗳️ St. Lucie County Places Sales Tax Renewal on November Ballot
St. Lucie County commissioners voted to place the half-cent infrastructure sales tax renewal on the November ballot, one day before the August 5 deadline. The measure has funded road resurfacing, sidewalks and drainage improvements since 2018 and is set to expire in 2028. Commissioners split on concerns about pairing the tax measure with statewide property tax reform on the same ballot.

⚾ Stuart Baseball Field Referendum Moving to November Ballot
Stuart voters could decide in November whether future city commissions must obtain voter approval before selling or leasing city-owned baseball fields. The proposed charter amendment would apply to Guy Davis and Sailfish ball fields. The city commission approved moving the item to a second reading. City Attorney Lee Baggett said the measure is intended to protect the fields going forward, not in response to any current proposal.
