šŸŒ… šŸ€ St. Patrickā€™s Events, CafeĢ 772ā€™s Return & A Special Tribute!

ā˜€ļøšŸŒ± PLUS: A heartfelt tribute, CafeĢ 772ā€™s new location & St. Pattyā€™s Day plans!

Good Afternoon, Sunland

Itā€™s Tuesday! Andā€¦ Mistakes happenā€”Iā€™m definitely no stranger to them. But Iā€™m grateful to have built enough trust with everyone here that when I do slip up, itā€™s not World War Z.

Yesterday was no exceptionā€”I mistakenly said that the Peacock House Art Foundation art tour was freeā€¦ and it wasnā€™t. Apologies if you showed up expecting free entry!

I spoke with Emily (who was a pleasure to talk to) and went ahead and purchased 10 tickets, just in case someone arrived thinking it was free. Plus, all the proceeds go toward art supplies for kids, so I didnā€™t mind supporting a good cause. They have an interesting program thatā€™s worth checking out!

While I wish I hadnā€™t made the oversight, Iā€™m glad it turned into something positive.

Alrightā€¦

šŸ‹ The Main Squeeze: 50 Years on the Road: A Tribute to My Grandmother, Martha Vickers

TL;DR: Last Friday, I got to witness something specialā€”my grandmother, Martha Vickers, being honored for 50 years of service as a school bus driver in St. Lucie County. But this isnā€™t just a story about her. Itā€™s about dedication, resilience, and what it means to show up every day for something bigger than yourself.

I got a call from my mom, Sherri Brown, last Tuesday asking, ā€œWhat are you doing Friday morning around 8 AM?ā€

Nothing much, I told her.

ā€œWell, you should come to the North Compound. Your grandmother is being honored for driving school buses for St. Lucie County for 50 years.ā€

I was there, of courseā€”camera in hand, heart full.

At 4:00 AM Friday morning, like she has for decades, my grandmother got up for work. But this time, her final stop was different. At her last pickup, Superintendent Jon Prince stepped onto her bus to ride with her to the compound, where family, colleagues, school board members, and commissioners were waiting.

Flowers. Food. Applause. A celebration she absolutely deserved. She isnā€™t big on surprises, but I could tellā€”she felt the love. When asked why sheā€™s still doing it after all these years, her answer was simple:

ā€œI do it for the kids.ā€

At that moment, standing there with my camera, I realized this wasnā€™t just about her. It was a reflection of where I come fromā€”a family built on service, commitment, and sticking it out even when things get tough.

In the room stood:

  • My cousin, Sylvester aka Lil Me, who drove school buses for St. Lucie County for 20+ years

  • My Aunt Mary (my Grandmaā€™s twin sister), who has been driving for 41 years

  • My cousin, Iman, now a teacher in St. Lucie County

  • My mom, Sherri Brown, a 34-year educator

  • My Uncle Carnell, a St. Lucie County retired teacher.

And then there were the ones who couldnā€™t be there but still deserved to be mentioned:

  • My aunt, Mary Slater, a 34-year educator

  • My cousin, Eyvonda, an educator for nearly 20 years

  • My cousin, Shaunett, also an educator for decades

  • My grandfather, James Vickers, who drove school buses for St. Lucie County for 30+ years but is no longer with us

  • My uncle, Darin Slater, who was a pillar of the community, a barber for over 35 years, and the catalyst behind Sunland News

Iā€™m sure Iā€™m leaving out a BUNCH of peopleā€”my family group chat will let me know after they read thisā€¦ But it really just came into view how important community and home is in my family and I look to keep that going!

And the celebration isnā€™t over. Tonight (Tuesday), my grandmother will be recognized at the St. Lucie County School Board meetingā€”something sheā€™s been an active part of for years. If youā€™ve got time, come out and celebrate her. Iā€™ll be there.

50 years speaks for itself. There are few things in life you can do that long without making a decision, early on, to stick it outā€”no matter what.

So, if youā€™re reading this and feeling stuck, uninspired, or unsure, just rememberā€”commitment is its own kind of legacy.

This oneā€™s for her. šŸ’›
