Welp, that was quick!

Just a day after the Florida Department of Transportation revoked statewide permits for automated license plate readers along state roads, St. Lucie County commissioners voted Tuesday night to go a step further and remove the cameras from county controlled roads as well. It passed. But it was not without a real conversation first.

Commissioners Fowler and Townsend voted no and their concern was not necessarily about keeping the cameras. It was about the process. They wanted the public to have a chance to weigh in. They wanted to hear directly from the three police chiefs, Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce and the Sheriff's Office, before the board made a decision.

What the motion directs staff to do 📋:

The fact that this covers any automated vehicle identification system regardless of manufacturer is interesting. This is not just about Flock by name. And the timing of all of it, the state moving Monday, the county moving Tuesday, is worth a much closer look. That is exactly what I am working on.

🏥 Indian River County Hospital Proposal Needs Height Approval

An investor group including former County Commissioner Tim Zorc wants to build a third hospital near Indian River State College at State Road 60 and 66th Avenue. The 250,000 square foot, five-story facility exceeds county codes limiting commercial buildings to 60,000 square feet and 35 feet height. Three hospital companies have expressed interest. The County Commission will discuss height variance at an October 6 meeting. Commissioners acknowledged the need but cautioned that changing limits could invite other requests.

📊 St. Lucie County Opens Informal Meetings to Public

Starting September 8, St. Lucie County will live-stream informal commission meetings on YouTube and the county's meeting portal. Informal meetings are working sessions where commissioners hear presentations and provide direction, though no formal votes occur. County leadership said residents should have access to these conversations before final decisions are made. Live-streaming the sessions improves government transparency.

🏫 Martin County Schools Pause Warfield Merger Over Data Center

Martin County School Board member Amy Pritchett called for delaying a proposed merger that would close Warfield Elementary and move students to Indiantown Middle School campus, citing concerns about a nearby data center. Indiantown Middle is about two miles from the potential Tesoro Groves data center site recently rezoned for Light Industrial use. Pritchett said the district needs health data before proceeding. The merger aims to address enrollment imbalances and increase campus capacity from 890 to 1,640 students.
