🌐 Fort Pierce Police Department Calls for Better Pay and Resources

At a recent City Commission meeting, Fort Pierce police officers voiced concerns about pay, resources, and overall department support. With starting and maximum wages among the lowest in the region, officers shared stories of financial strain, including an officer lending his only uniform shirt to a new recruit for a swearing-in ceremony. The union representing the officers is advocating for competitive pay to attract and retain quality talent.

Commissioner Michael Broderick acknowledged budget constraints but emphasized that public safety must remain a priority. A recent survey from the union highlighted dissatisfaction with pay, training, equipment, and mental health resources. Alarmingly, about 30% of the department’s sworn officers indicated they might leave within the next year.

The head of the police union, Fabian Zamora, argued that better compensation could help bring in and keep top-notch officers, ultimately creating a more robust police force. The upcoming negotiations will be crucial in determining whether the city can meet the needs of the police department…

⛽ Gas Prices Increase Across the State

Well, here’s something we can all get mad about together—gas prices. A few weeks ago, we mentioned that we might see a dip at the pump soon because the cost per barrel of oil was expected to drop by close to $10. Well, one of those things happened, but unfortunately, it’s not the one that benefits us right now. The prices at the pump have actually risen recently, both across the county and the state of Florida.

The state average hit $3.46 per gallon, up just over six cents from the previous week. This increase comes despite a four-week decline in U.S. crude oil prices, which had fallen about $10 per barrel. The rising gas prices could be due to an increased demand for gas, likely spurred by recent storms and the end of summer travel.

In the meantime, we can take AAA's advice on how to make the most out of our gas tanks while we wait for prices to become road-trip-worthy again. They suggest combining errands to limit driving time, shopping around for the best gas prices, paying with cash (since some retailers charge extra for credit card payments), removing excess weight from your vehicle, and driving conservatively. Every little bit helps…
