🏗️ Fort Pierce Approves Selvitz Asphalt Plant Despite Concerns
The Fort Pierce City Commission approved a site plan for an asphalt plant on Selvitz Road on Sept. 16, despite concerns about stormwater drainage and potential environmental impacts. The plant, which had operated without proper stormwater infrastructure under a previous owner, has now committed to improving its berms and adding a stormwater detention pond.
Commissioner J. Johnson voted against the plan, citing concerns over the lack of oversight from outside agencies like the South Florida Water Management District. However, the revised site plan met all city requirements, leading to a 4-1 approval.

Growing Space Junk Problem?!
Did you know there are over 30,000 pieces of trackable space junk orbiting Earth? Neither Did I, and it’s pretty bizarre. 💀 The European Space Agency (ESA) is taking action with their souj… I mean DRACO mission. Set to launch in 2027, DRACO will provide critical data as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere, helping scientists design satellites that break apart less and reduce debris AKA junk.
The ESA’s goal is to stop the creation of new space junk by 2030.
New Law on Public Camping
There are currently over 30 laws that took effect yesterday, October 1st (beginning of the fiscal year), but there’s one law in particular I want to dig into. Now, a quick aside – I’ve wanted to do some proper coverage on this, but I want to give the right time and energy to this topic.
HB 1365: Unauthorized Public Camping and Public Sleeping
Signed by the governor months ago, this law prohibits camping on city streets, sidewalks, and parks. According to the governor, the purpose of this law is to ensure Florida streets are clean and safe, adding that it ensures local governments utilize the resources of homeless shelters to provide individuals with the safety and services they need. Local governments must designate a specific area for encampments.
According to the law, counties and municipalities are not allowed to authorize public sleeping or camping on public property unless certified by the Florida Department of Children and Families. The law also allows residents and business owners to sue local governments that permit people to sleep or camp on public property. This part of the law will take effect on January 1, 2025.
This law raises several important questions for our community:
What is the current state of shelter systems in Saint Lucie County? Are they sufficient to meet the needs of individuals seeking temporary housing? Currently, it seems shelters are largely circumstantial, focusing on weather or specific conditions. Is there a broader solution available?
How will the expected population growth in Saint Lucie over the next 5-10 years impact housing stability? With the area set to grow, will the number of people without a place to stay increase as housing costs rise and wages stagnate?
What role should local governments play in ensuring housing solutions for vulnerable populations? Given the rising costs of living, is it realistic to expect a solution without significant government or community intervention?
These are questions Sunland News aims to explore thoroughly as we seek to build a robust understanding of this issue.

Sunland Sunland Sunland!
Just a quick story on why I think Fort Pierce, Port Saint Lucie, and Saint Lucie County are such interesting places. I was in Publix, and I started chit-chatting with a guy. He mentioned he’s from Brooklyn but moved down to Florida about seven years ago. He’s been in Fort Pierce for about seven months. Since I love New York and have been there plenty of times, I was intrigued. He mentioned he couldn’t stand Long Island, which sparked the lady at the register to say, “Hey, I’m from Long Island!” Then, a woman who happened to be leaving the store came to her defense, saying she’s from Queens, and the gentleman rounding the corner to join the line was from Jersey. 😂😂
Florida is such an interesting place, and our county specifically is one that brings together people from so many different regions. There’s something special about that. And as a county I think its really the thing that sets us apart.
So far, I haven’t really tapped into that feeling as much as I’d like, but it’s something I’m looking forward to exploring more. See you tomorrow!
With love,
Ja’Min
