I went to a beautiful event this past Friday and I want to make sure you know about it 🕊️.

Survivors of Murder Victims, also known as SOMVSU, hosted a National Day of Remembrance ceremony at Dreamland Park on 25th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard in Fort Pierce. The organization's mission is to create an atmosphere of peer support for surviving families of murdered victims as they journey through the grieving and judiciary process.

What made this ceremony so powerful was that it was not just about loss. It was about the people. Families got to stand up and tell the story of their loved one, what they meant to them, what life has looked like since they have been gone and where they are in the journey of letting go. The stories spanned nearly 30 years to just three years ago and what rang true across all of them was the same thing: no matter how long it has been, it still feels like yesterday and there is still a part of you that cannot believe this person is gone.

Each family on the program also received a bench dedicated to their loved one. Those benches were added to a growing circle of memorial benches at Dreamland Park alongside a commemorative wall of names. It is a permanent place in Fort Pierce where these families and this community can come back to.

🎓 Indian River County Schools Approves $434M Budget with Lower Millage

Indian River County Schools approved a $434 million budget for 2026-27, an increase of about $14 million from the previous year. The district's overall millage rate decreased 1.4 percent compared to the prior year despite the higher spending. General operations make up 57 percent of the budget, while capital projects account for 21 percent.

💰 Port St. Lucie Cuts Property Taxes for 11th Year Straight

Port St. Lucie City Council unanimously reduced the millage rate from 4.9750 to 4.8750 for the fiscal year beginning October 1. The reduction marks the 11th consecutive year of tax cuts, which have saved the average homeowner nearly $2,000 over the past decade while the city absorbs rapid population growth.
