Good Morning, Sunland

It’s Wednesday! and let's jump right in!

👁️ Caught my eye: Lion Country Safari was sold to Larry Ellison's family for $30 million. After nearly six decades under its founding family, the Loxahatchee park says operations will remain unchanged and their commitment to wildlife conservation continues.

🚔 Main Squeeze: Fort Pierce Police Chief Search
Process vs. Public Voice

Watch my full breakdown of what happened Monday night (10 minutes, all the context you need)

What's happening: Fort Pierce selects its next police chief December 8th. All three finalists are from out of state. All three local candidates, including Acting Deputy Chief Caleb Gillette (who has union support), were eliminated.

Monday night exploded: Commissioner Michael Broderick added the police chief search to the agenda. Within minutes, 15 people lined up to speak with the same message: bring back the local candidates, specifically Gillette.

"We want a police chief from this community for this community," one resident said.

The commission deadlocked 2-2. No vote was taken.

The tension: The city charter says City Manager Richard Chess hires the police chief with commission approval. Chess used a credible search firm (S. Renée Narloch and Associates) and a committee that included former police chief leadership. They delivered three qualified out-of-state candidates.

But the community is speaking loud: The police union endorsed Gillette. His mother testified. Retired officers testified. The support is overwhelming.

The question: When the charter and the community disagree, which one wins?

Last night's meet and greet: I attended. Good turnout. All three finalists were there at a round table answering questions about their backgrounds and vision for Fort Pierce.

What's next:

  • Today (December 3rd): Finalists interview with commissioners

  • December 8th: Chess makes his recommendation and the commission votes

Your take: Should Fort Pierce follow the process or listen to the community? Drop your thoughts here.
