🌅 Mimms Out, New Market, & Food Fest

🌴 This is Sunland News

Good Morning, Sunland! It’s Friday!

We’ve made it to the weekend! If you’re looking for something to do, check out the jam-packed events list that was sent out yesterday. It’s long, but definitely worth it! And hey, why not be the fly friend who forwards it to your circle? Sharing is caring, right?

Now, can we talk about this rain? And the flooding?

Looks like it's going to be hanging around all weekend, which isn’t ideal. But hopefully, I’ll still be at the new Olive Branch Green Market tomorrow morning with the Sunland Photobooth, rain or shine. I love a good market, and this one seems super promising! It’ll be happening twice a month over at the IRSC campus in Saint Lucie West, which I think is a perfect spot.

Hope to see you there! Now, let’s dive into today!

🚨 Coastal Flooding Advisory in Effect for St. Lucie County 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flooding Advisory for St. Lucie County throughout the weekend. With King Tides (seasonally high astronomical tides) and thunderstorms, the risk of flash flooding is high, especially in roads, canals, and swales.

⚠️ Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

As of 4:30 p.m (Thursday)., there are major flooding reports in St. Lucie West and the Port St. Lucie areas.

Stay safe out there!

🌍 WORLD AT LARGE

Fed has officially cut rates! What’s next…📉

At their recent meeting, U.S. central bankers projected a year-end interest rate of 4.4%, with two more rate cuts expected by December. This marks a shift as inflation begins to ease and unemployment ticks up. By the end of 2025, rates are expected to drop even further to 3.4%, signaling a more neutral monetary policy outlook.

City Manager Nick Mimms Asked to Retire

Well, that escalated quickly. Just a few weeks ago, we covered the story of City Manager Nick Mimms being placed on administrative leave after being charged with bid rigging and official misconduct. The project in question involved a local nonprofit and construction in the Lincoln Park area of Fort Pierce. At first, the City Commission hesitated on launching an independent investigation, citing the hefty price tag—up to $80,000 per month—just to look into the matter.

But now, things have taken a sharp turn. In a recent vote, the commission not only pulled the plug on the investigation but also decided to cut off Mimms’ pay while he awaits trial. They’ve officially asked him to resign by November 4. If he doesn’t, they’re prepared to consider firing him.

The commission’s decision to end the investigation was based on the fact that Mimms hasn’t yet been convicted—criminal trials can take years—and they didn’t want to drain city funds while waiting. The charges alone, without a conviction, aren’t enough to fire him for cause, but they are enough to put his future in limbo.

Mimms, who has been part of the state’s Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP), stands to gain access to his retirement funds if he chooses to resign. However, if he holds out, the city could terminate his employment without cause, which would still trigger a $64,000 severance payout. But with felony charges hanging over his head, the city's leadership is clearly looking to distance itself from the situation.

As for the city, Acting Manager Linda Cox will continue in her role as the city works on tightening its procurement and purchasing processes to prevent this from happening again.

📸 Sunland Photobooth

I’ve learned so much this week about this newsletter. It started off a little rough but slowly picked up steam—guess that’s life! Every time I think the newsletter might not be viable or is on the verge of being useless to people, something or someone reminds me just how insane I am for thinking such foolish things. I’m walking the right path.

The goal is to make this space feel like what it is: art. To make the news feel like a conversation you have over dinner with friends, playing cards, talking about, “Did you hear what happened to so and so’s grand?” I want it to feel like that—something that reminds you of home.

Thank you for being here.

See you Monday!

With love,
Ja’Min
