🏖️ Fort Pierce beach renourishment starts today with 24/7 construction

Fort Pierce beachgoers should expect closures and round-the-clock construction starting today as a $15 million federal beach renourishment project gets underway at Jetty Park.

Why it matters: This comes just weeks after Fort Pierce declared a local state of emergency over severe beach erosion that forced The Dune Bar to temporarily close. The county dumped 10,000 cubic yards of emergency sand at nearly $500,000 to hold things over until this project could begin.

The timeline:

  • Today: Portions of Seaway Drive and Jetty Park parking areas close for staging

  • Friday, March 14 through Monday, March 23: South Jetty and adjacent beaches fully closed

  • Mid-May: Project completion

What's happening: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hired Manson Construction to place about 400,000 cubic yards of sand along one mile of shoreline just south of Fort Pierce Inlet. Once work begins, it's 24/7 until completion.

The cost: $15.1 million total. Federal government covers about 78%, St. Lucie County Erosion District pays the remaining 22%.

What locals are saying: "The ocean is going to take away whatever they put back," one fisherman said. Another resident: "Every year they're putting tons and tons of sand here, and it just happens again."

Why it keeps happening: The federal inlet blocks the natural flow of sand, causing erosion. County Communications Director Erick Gill explained the situation: "This is maintenance that we have to do because of the federal inlet."

The big picture: The county is studying long-term solutions like permanent structures, but that would require state and federal permits that could take years.
