💚 Thrive IRC to Operate Substance Abuse Recovery Hub in Vero Beach

The Indian River Hospital District approved a three-year lease allowing Thrive IRC to transform a vacant 10th Street building into a 24-7 substance abuse recovery and mental health services hub. The nonprofit will pay no rent in exchange for meeting operational and reporting requirements, including quarterly capital campaign updates and measurable outcomes on people served and connected to treatment. Within 215 days of the July 1 start date, Thrive must begin operating centralized intake and recovery housing services. The agreement includes an option for Thrive to purchase the property if it meets lease requirements, with the sale price determined through appraisal.

⚖️ IRSC Professor Sues Over 2024 Termination, Clears Motion to Dismiss

A federal judge denied motions to dismiss a discrimination suit filed by Syed Ammar Ahmed, a former Indian River State College political science instructor fired in March 2024 after the college received an alert he appeared on a "Homeland Security database due to terrorist threats." The college later determined the database didn't exist and the only evidence was a 2010 Facebook post Ahmed made as a teenager. IRSC drafted an apology and reinstatement letter after realizing he was wrongfully terminated but didn't send it until August 2024 when his lawyers indicated legal action. Ahmed's civil rights claim is moving to trial.

🐻 400-Pound Black Bear Struck and Killed on Martin Highway

A 400-pound male black bear was killed Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Southwest Martin Highway near Warfield Boulevard. The motorist stopped immediately, remained at the scene and called the Sheriff's Office. The driver was not injured but startled by the collision. Florida Fish and Wildlife removed the bear from the roadway. Authorities urged motorists to remain alert along that stretch, particularly during early morning and evening hours when wildlife frequently enters the roadway. Recent reports have also noted black bear sightings in other Treasure Coast areas including Tradition.
