Good Morning, Sunland

It's Wednesday! Someone sent me this video asking whether I’d heard anything about a Trader Joe’s coming to the Treasure Coast. I haven’t, at least not until now. This rumor has been floating around for a while, so I’m putting it out there to see if anybody has heard something. If you know someone who could confirm or deny it, reply to his email. I’d love to get a real answer.

👀 In case you missed it: There are still some weekday events happening today and tomorrow that I don’t think you should miss. You can check them out here.

🟠 Main Squeeze: IRSC voted to pause a proposal to cut swimming and diving Tuesday

The Indian River State College Board of Trustees met Tuesday in Okeechobee and voted to table President Timothy Moore’s proposal to eliminate the swimming and diving programs. The room was packed with current swimmers, former athletes and community members. The men’s team has won 52 consecutive national championships. The women’s team has won 48. The board did not vote yes or no. They asked for a comprehensive report with community input and set November 17th as the next moment of reckoning.

The president’s position is that it comes down to money and the math is not working.

What Moore said 📋:

  • 💰 The program costs $1.4 to $2 million annually

  • 💸 Donations are not coming in to cover it

  • 🏦 Sustaining it as is would require a $15 to $20 million endowment

  • ✂️ If swimming and diving stays without that funding, the college may have to cut 50% across all sports

  • 📉 There is also a separate proposal to move remaining sports from Division I to Division II, which could save around $500,000

A petition started by former swimmer Ella Smith crossed 12,500 signatures in under a week. November 17th is when the board meets again.

📰 Press Round: Buc-ee's, Condos & Data Centers

🛣️ Buc-ee's Plan for St. Lucie County Keeps Moving Forward

Plans for a Buc-ee's travel center in St. Lucie County are continuing to move ahead, with the Texas-based chain's 120-pump location planned off Indrio Road near Interstate 95. Buc-ee's has received site plan approval, and its building permits are now under county review. County staff say they're ready to move forward once the company addresses remaining comments from staff. The project was first announced in 2023, and the company's website still lists a 2027 opening, so the timeline may stretch depending on how quickly those comments are resolved.

🏡 Treasure Coast Home Prices Rise as Supply Drops

Median home sale prices rose in Martin and Indian River counties in September compared to last year, while St. Lucie County dipped slightly. Martin’s median climbed to $600,000, and Indian River’s reached $390,000. Fewer homes are on the market across all three counties, and every county has leaned further toward a seller’s market. Martin County has the tightest supply at 3.6 months of inventory, well below the 5½ month benchmark for a balanced market. Mortgage rates also rose, with the 30-year fixed hitting 7.28 percent.

💾 Martin County Passes One-Year Data Center Moratorium

Martin County commissioners voted 4-0 on Tuesday to pause new data center development for one year while they figure out how to handle future projects. The moratorium doesn't affect a hyperscale data center application off Kanner Highway west of I-95, since that application was submitted before the vote. The decision comes as residents continue to voice concerns about the future of data centers in the area, including the ongoing Indiantown proposal.
