⚾ Iconic Fort Pierce Little League Faces Closure Due to Safety Concerns
Iconic little league right here in our city, Northside Bat & Ball, may be coming to a halt as parents have cited safety concerns for their children. Coach Rupert Blackwood recently spoke with WPTV West Palm Beach and shared the news with a somber tone, hoping to galvanize the community into finding ways to reassure the safety of the league and the surrounding area.
When I first heard about this story, the Little League sounded pretty familiar. While I wasn’t a baseball player myself, I began to recall the old newspaper clippings and team photos that still cover the walls of my Uncle Slate’s barbershop. I grew up in a family of some pretty athletic people and began to remember their stories of playing in the league when they were young. They spoke with glee about the past but grew somber when realizing that this thing they once loved could be coming to an end.
I reached out to an ex-player of that league, also a well-known NFL player, Albert Wilson, just to see if he had heard the story. He hadn’t, but was very adamant about seeing what he could do to get the league back on track. I told him I would share the story in the newsletter to hopefully find support, and he said he was fully on board with helping as well.
All hope is not lost in this matter. As such a staple in the community and the history of athletes in the city, we hope to see the league flooded with kids playing and parents cheering once again. We’ll be sure to follow up on this in future newsletters.
