Good Morning, Sunland
It's Wednesday! And apparently Hard Rock Casino does road analysis for some reason. Not really sure why, but they recently did one that I thought was pretty interesting. They looked at crash data across the country from 2020 to 2024 and ranked the most dangerous roads in Florida. US 1 came in at number one, I-95 came in second.
The funny part is that the same study ranked Florida as the state with the best drivers in the country. We score 83.85 out of 100. Only about seven percent of Florida drivers have a speeding violation on record. I always love these reports because there’s probably one out there that says the complete opposite. Who knows who’s really right? It’s probably somewhere in between. Alright…

🟠 Main Squeeze: Fort Pierce is working on new rules for food trucks

Fort Pierce has an estimated 60 mobile food vendors operating across the city right now and the rules that govern them are outdated. City staff brought a full presentation to the commission Sunday morning laying out what is broken and what they want to fix 🚚.
The core issue is a two sided problem. Food truck operators have been complaining that the current three day rule forces them to keep moving even when they have a legitimate setup on a leased property. Brick and mortar restaurant owners have been complaining that food trucks get to skip the expensive site plan, building permit and inspection process that they had to go through. Both sides have a point.
What the current rules look like 📋:
⏰ Food trucks can only stay in the same location for three days
🏚️ No prohibition on setting up on unpaved grass lots
📝 No requirement to get written permission from the property owner
🔥 No requirement to show a current fire or health inspection
🪑 Tables, chairs, canopies and separate tents are currently allowed
What the city is proposing 📋:
📋 Food trucks that want to stay longer than three days would have to submit a site plan
🚫 No more setting up on unimproved or unpaved lots
✍️ Written permission from the property owner required
🔥 Proof of fire and health inspection within the past 12 months required
⛺ Separate tents and canopies removed for short term vendors
🏗️ A food truck court concept with concrete pads and utility hookups is also being explored
What comes next: Before anything goes to a vote the city wants to host a public stakeholder session open to food truck operators, brick and mortar owners, residents and anyone else who wants to weigh in. An online survey is also coming. Staff is also going to loop in building, planning, engineering, utilities and code enforcement to put together a comprehensive package before bringing anything back to the commission.
If you are a food truck operator or a restaurant owner in Fort Pierce this is the time to pay attention and show up 👀.
