Florida universities remove sociology from graduation requirements

The State University System Board of Governors voted Thursday to remove Introduction to Sociology as a general education requirement at all 12 public universities, affecting more than 430,000 students.
Why it matters: Starting in the 2026 to 2027 academic year, students won't need the course to graduate. Faculty warn this could drastically reduce enrollment and eventually lead to the course being cut altogether.
What happens now: Sociology remains available as an elective and can still be offered as a major or minor. Students just won't be required to take it.
How this decision was made: The State University System Board of Governors oversees Florida's 12 public universities. The 17 member board sets policy for the entire system, including degree requirements, tuition rates, and academic standards. Members are appointed to seven year terms.
The board meets regularly throughout the year to vote on systemwide policies. Thursday's vote passed 15 to 2.
What else happened at the meeting: Board members discussed Florida's university capacity crisis. One board member noted:
Florida has grown by 1.5 million people since 2020 with essentially no university capacity expansion
UF received nearly 100,000 applications
USF received 97,000 applications
FSU received 90,000 applications
The board also voted 6 to 4 to allow the University of Florida to raise out of state MBA tuition at its Jacksonville and Miami campuses. When asked how many other university presidents wanted similar authority, every hand in the room went up.
The bottom line: The course has been part of Florida's general education requirements for decades. The vote removing it was not on the original meeting agenda.
