Ghosts in Our Backyard
Growing up here, I've only been privy to the spooky, weird, and haunted legend of the Devil's Tree. Not sure if many know, but a less-than-stellar movie was actually made about the tree (seriously, look it up: Devil's Tree: Rooted Evil). But after some digging, I realized there are a couple more haunted places right in our backyard. Hereโs what I foundโฆ Oh, last note, you can actually book a ghost tour to these places. Check it out.
P.P. Cobb Building (Fort Pierce)
You know how some coffee shops have an "old soul" feel to them? Well, P.P. Cobb Building takes that to a whole different level. Built in 1882, this spot has history to say the leastโand apparently, a couple of spiritsโbaked into its walls. The building used to be a general store, but now it's a coffee shop. People have reported hearing their names called when no one's around, and one lady even felt a friendly ghost give her arm a reassuring squeeze. Go there for a caffeine boost, stay for the ghost.
Boston House (Fort Pierce)
Imagine living in a mansion with a riverfront view, but instead of just admiring sunsets, youโre also sharing space with... well, something else. The Historic Boston House, built in 1909, has that classic haunted mansion energy, like the Eddie Murphy kind. Tenants have reported windows opening on their own, doors unlocking, andโof courseโa strange, lingering perfume scent wafting through the air. I think Iโm good on checking this outโI have a weird thing about strong scents. ๐
Sunrise Theatre (Fort Pierce)
The only thing more dramatic than the plays, music, and performances at the Sunrise Theatre is the building itself, apparently. Built in 1923, this place has so much history, it might be too full. During renovations in 2006, construction workers reported tools moving on their own and strange noises coming from within the walls. There have even been sightings of opaque figures in the windows. Catch a show and maybe catch a glimpse of somethingโor someoneโnot listed on the playbill.
Devilโs Tree (Port St. Lucie)
And now we arrive at the final boss of creepy: The Devilโs Tree. This infamous spot in Oak Hammock Park has a straight-up terrifying history. In the 1970s, some awful things went down here, and ever since, the place has been a โgo-toโ spot for paranormal energy. Chainsaws stop working near the tree, people report feeling cold chills, and the park bathrooms? Letโs just say those stall doors have a life of their own.
Have you been to any of these places? Can you verify or deny any of these claims? Reply to this email and let me know!
