🦀 Crabby's Update: Here's What Happened (And We're Moving Forward)

This is likely the last Crabby's story focused on the former tenant. The chapter is closed. Future updates will be about what's next for the property.
The Fort Pierce City Commission got the full story Monday night on what happened with Crabby's Dockside, which vacated city property at the marina in February owing $215,000 in back rent and property taxes.
The timeline: Crabby's reached out in September 2025 asking for help. The city met with them November 19 and asked for a business plan. Crabby's submitted a proposal December 29 asking for 18 months of free rent but didn't include the financial details the city requested.
By then, City Manager Richard Chess discovered Crabby's was four months behind on rent. He set the proposal aside and sent a default letter January 30. On February 12, Crabby's told the city they were moving out by February 15.
Property tax issue: The city didn't bill the tenant for 2023 and 2024 property taxes until July 2025, even though the county sent the bills on time. Chess apologized to the tax collector's office and is addressing it with staff.
What's owed:
Past due rent and sales: $83,000
Property taxes (2023, 2024, 2025): $132,000
Total: $215,000
The lease ran through 2040, meaning $3.1 million in lost revenue.
What's next: The city is completing a title search to check for liens. Once done, they'll bring recommendations back to the Commission about recovering funds and developing an RFP for a new tenant.

🤖 Schools Now Embracing AI as Learning Tool
Treasure Coast schools are embracing artificial intelligence as a tool for creating lesson plans, assessing students and enhancing learning after initially banning the technology over cheating concerns. Educators compare the shift to calculators, which were once banned from math classes but later embraced to help students solve higher-level problems more quickly.
