Good Morning, Sunland
It's Monday! I started a new series called "What's for $10." It's a series where I go around the county to see what we can eat at some of our local restaurants for just $10. First episode: Stoney. I'm super excited about this series. Before, I was thinking I could seek out restaurants that are low cost, but now I'm just interested in how far $10 might take us in general, so stay tuned for that.

🟠 Main Squeeze: The Fort Pierce city attorney vote is tomorrow and it is the last regular chance to act

The Fort Pierce City Commission meets today at 9 a.m. to take up City Attorney Sara Hedges' contract one more time. Her contract automatically renews unless the commission gives written written notice 90 days before it expires on September 11th. That deadline is June 12th, which makes tomorrow's meeting the last regular opportunity to act 🏛️.
How we got here: At the May 18th meeting a motion was made to renew Hedges' contract for another year. It failed 3 to 2. The item was placed back on the June 8th agenda for further discussion and a final decision.
What commissioners are saying at last week's meeting 🗣️: Commissioner Broderick has been direct: "In my opinion this is a witch hunt going after Sara Hedges as city attorney. This has nothing to do with policies and procedures in the city charter." Commissioner Johnson framed it differently: "It's not about a person, it's not personal. It's about understanding what is going on from our leaders that we count on to lead every day." Commissioner Dzadovsky laid out his position plainly: "My simple position is to not renew the contract, let the contract run out. If at the end of the day the city attorney is the best person for the job, so be it. This commission can then renegotiate the contract, but you have options."
Hedges herself confirmed the stakes at a recent meeting: "My understanding is that as of September 11th, it won't renew if you have not given me notice 90 days before that date, which is June 12th."
What's next: Today, I will be following it closely and bringing updates 📅.

🚚 Indian River Shores Council Urged to Lift Outdated Pickup Truck Ban
The Indian River Shores Town Council heard pleas to lift a 1980s-era ordinance banning overnight parking of pickup trucks on streets and driveways between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., though trucks are allowed in enclosed garages. At a public workshop May 28, all speakers supported lifting the ban, noting modern F150 trucks cost $60,000 to $120,000 plus while resembling SUVs, and Florida banned HOAs from restricting trucks in 2024. The council will consider whether to direct staff to draft ordinance changes.

🌱 Three-County Fertilizer Ban Begins June 1 Through September 30
Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties have banned all fertilizer containing phosphorus or nitrogen on lawns and landscaping from June 1 to September 30 to reduce nutrient-rich runoff during the rainy season that can cause algae blooms in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River. The blooms can shade out beneficial plants and release toxins affecting human and wildlife health. Composting is recommended as an alternative to add nutrients to landscapes.

🔥 Indiantown Brush Fire Grows to 125 Acres, 99% Contained
A brush fire that began Friday June 5 at 2600 Southwest Warfield Boulevard grew to 125 acres by Sunday after rekindling Saturday and is 99% contained. The initially 37.8 acre fire was caused by what officials believe was a "holdover fire" from a lightning strike that smoldered underground. No structures were threatened and no injuries reported. The Florida Forest Service continues monitoring and investigating.
