Yesterday we told you Brightline was expected to file for bankruptcy. Here is what actually happened 🚂.

Thursday, last night Brightline announced a Restructuring Support Agreement that brings $490 million in new financing commitments while significantly cutting its debt load. The operating company that runs the trains, Brightline Trains Florida LLC, is not filing for bankruptcy at all. Only certain parent entities are filing for Chapter 11 to implement the restructuring. Service between Miami and Orlando continues normally.

The Stuart question: A proposed Brightline station in downtown Stuart has been in discussion for over two years with no firm timeline. The restructuring does not kill those plans according to the company but it also does not move them forward. That conversation still has a lot of road or track ahead of it.

The bottom line is that Brightline is not shutting down. It is restructuring a massive debt load from a $6 billion expansion and doing it with the support of the people who lent them the money in the first place. Whether that changes anything for Stuart is the question worth watching 👀.

Vero Beach City Council voted to double most parking fines for the first time since 2011. Timed parking violations will jump from $20 to $40, while other infractions rise from $30 to $60. Handicap violations remain at $200. Police said the increases will encourage motorists to abide by regulations and keep parking spaces moving.

Home prices climbed across the Treasure Coast in August compared to last year. Martin County reached $656,900, Indian River hit $410,000, and St. Lucie settled at $402,500. Rising insurance rates, taxes and mortgage rates around 6.66 percent are squeezing homebuyers even as the market remains favored toward sellers across all three counties.

Stuart Commission reduced the 2027 millage rate from 5.0 to 4.95 mills after a two commissioners refused to support the higher rate. The compromise required using more than $1 million from reserves to balance the budget. Mortell warned the move could create problems next year if Amendment 3 passes, potentially draining reserves rapidly.
