Good Morning, Sunland
It's Friday! And I'm polling again. Would you enjoy a meeting clips page? There's so many public meetings. Planning Board, City Council, CRA, and much much more, and that's just in St. Lucie County. When you look at the Treasure Coast at large there's many many many more. And we currently clip things like this, but I feel like we could do more but wouldn't want to clog up the main Sunland account. Would you all watch a meeting clips page?
💔 This story broke my heart: So wanted to share and send prayers to the family of Chris Brooks. Chris Brooks, 18, was killed in a crash just hours before he was set to walk across the stage with South Fork High School's class of 2026. His friends described him as someone who was active in his church, competed on the bowling team, and had a big and infectious smile. I’m praying for him and his family.

🎶 Sounds like: "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You" — UB40 … You know, big bands like UB40 don’t exist anymore. Maybe within the worship music space, but that’s about it. Wish big collectives like this still existed.

🟠 Main Squeeze: Fort Pierce is dealing with a trash pickup problem and the city is working on a fix

Residents have been calling commissioners about trash and bulk refuge not being picked up on time across Fort Pierce, and at Monday night's meeting Public Works Director Devoshay Johnson laid out what is going on and what the city is doing about it 🗑️.
What is driving the delays (per the city) 📋:
👷 Solid waste is dealing with the same staffing retention problem as the police department. The average driver stays about a year and a half before leaving for higher pay elsewhere
🚛 Equipment issues have trucks going down at times, creating gaps in coverage
📍 New drivers learning routes by memory instead of a system has led to inconsistent pickups
What the city is doing about it:
🗺️ Implementing a turn by turn routing system on tablets in drivers' cabs to reduce training time and increase accountability
🔄 Restructuring the division with field operators doing post-route sweeps to catch anything missed
📸 A 90 day camera pilot is being planned to catch illegal dumping at known problem spots
📋 A code change is coming that would allow the city to fast track cleanups within 72 hours and bill property owners directly
Worth noting: Garbage pickup is always prioritized over bulk refuge pickup when the department falls behind. Commissioners also raised the issue of out of town landlords leaving entire apartment contents on sidewalks after evictions and called for those landlords to be billed directly 👀.

🏪 Two Vero Beach Businesses Closing
Sailfish Brewing Co. closed its Vero Beach location May 17 after nearly five years when its lease expired and rent increased beyond what made financial sense, with operations continuing at the Fort Pierce brewery. The Beach Shop, a coastal fashion retailer near Sexton Plaza founded in 1950 and owned by the Bireley family since 1966, is closing July 1 after more than 75 years.

🍽️ Boston House (finally) Opens in Fort Pierce
Boston House is officially opening Monday May 25 in Fort Pierce with elevated coastal dining, handcrafted cocktails, fresh seafood and steaks. The restaurant is taking limited reservations starting with lunch service after completing inspections and liquor license approval.
🏥 Martin County Approves Lease for Maternity Center
Martin County commissioners voted 4 to 1 to approve a $1 per year lease allowing Healthy Start Coalition to move forward with an $8 million maternity center at the former Emergency Operations Center near Cleveland Clinic South Hospital. The center aims to restore local childbirth services after Cleveland Clinic Martin North closed its labor and delivery unit in April 2025, with $1 million already secured through the state.
