Good Afternoon Sunland,

It’s Tuesday, which means three things: this is our Tuesday edition of the newsletter (expect live music and a quick deep dive in a second), it's our first afternoon edition, and I'm preparing to head down to Art Basel in Miami this weekend!

Let me explain that last bit. About two hours south of us, one of the world's biggest art weekends takes place annually during the first weekend of December. While Art Basel isn't in Saint Lucie County, it inspired me to highlight some of our local art galleries and their current exhibitions. Who knows? Maybe someday we'll have our own Basel... Alright.

St. Lucie County's Winter Arts Guide: Local Alternatives to Art Basel

While Miami's Art Basel captures international headlines, St. Lucie County is cultivating its own thriving arts scene. Here's your in-depth guide to current and upcoming exhibitions:

🎨 "Controlled Chaos" at MIDFLORIDA Event Center The St. Lucie Cultural Alliance presents their annual exhibition, exploring the tension between order and unpredictability. Opening night features live music, painting demonstrations, and a cash bar - perfect for mingling with fellow art lovers and meeting the artists behind the works.

Opened on October 3rd, Ends December 15th

🏛️ "StitchPunk" at A.E. Backus Museum Part of a prestigious global touring exhibition, StitchPunk features 27 international artists reimagining quilting as contemporary art. The exhibition includes works from artists across the U.S., UK, France, and Canada - including three Florida artists. This show arrives amid fiber art's rising prominence in major institutions like the Met and National Gallery.

Opening Reception: December 6, 6-8PM (remarks at 6:30)

🌟 "Star of Wonder" at IRSC Hallstrom Planetarium A beloved holiday tradition since 1993, this show explores the astronomical mystery behind the Star of Bethlehem. Journey back 2,000 years to recreate the skies over Judea in this family-friendly experience.

When: December 14, 2:30-3:30PM
Location: IRSC Massey Campus, Building N

🎨 The Highwaymen Heritage Trail While not a museum, this self-guided tour celebrates the legacy of 26 African American landscape artists who shaped Florida's art history. The trail includes 10 significant locations across Fort Pierce, featuring:

A.E. Backus's original studio
The 20-foot mosaic obelisk on Avenue D
Historic Pine Grove Cemetery
The Dunbar House where Alfred Hair created his speed painting technique
The iconic Lincoln Park Academy
Interactive kiosks and public art installations
