🍹The Refill: Florida Highwaymen History!

The Story Here:

The Florida Highwaymen’s art is famous, but their full story runs deeper than the iconic landscapes they painted. These self-taught Black artists from Fort Pierce defied segregation, sold paintings from their car trunks, and built an art movement that’s now worth millions. But beyond the framed works, their legacy continues in ways many don’t realize.

With the 8th Annual Highwaymen Heritage Trail Art Show & Festival happening this Saturday, Feb. 15, in Fort Pierce, I figured you could get more deeper history if you attend that event. So, here are three lesser-known facts about the Highwaymen that connect their past to the present.

🌍 What You Might Not Know:

🚗 A Trail Through History: Fort Pierce has an official Highwaymen Heritage Trail, a self-guided tour featuring key locations from their journey, including art studios, former juke joints, and memorial sites.

📜 From Trunks to License Plates: Their legacy is so ingrained in Florida’s culture that the state created a specialty Highwaymen license plate, turning their art into a rolling tribute.

🎬 Lights, Camera, Legacy: I’m not sure where they are at on this but, a feature film about the Highwaymen is currently in production, bringing their story to the screen. I’ve definitely floated the idea of doing a narrative on them at some point, so I hope it happens.

⏭ What’s Next:

The festival this weekend will showcase original Highwaymen art, live music, and guided trail tours—offering a rare chance to step inside their world.
