💰 Port St. Lucie to Discuss $24 Million Waste Pro Settlement at Monday Meeting
The City of Port St. Lucie City Council will hold a special meeting Monday, June 15 to publicly discuss how to use the $24 million settlement from Waste Pro, the city's former contracted waste hauler. The settlement resolves litigation filed in 2021 over Waste Pro's performance and premature contract cancellation, which forced the city to quickly find a new waste hauler. City Council and staff will review options for the settlement funds at the meeting, marking the first public discussion of how to allocate the windfall. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 121 Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard. Council will consider how these funds can best serve residents moving forward.

💧 Lake Okeechobee Levels Remain Low as Conditions Shift Across Treasure Coast Estuaries
According to the South Florida Water Management District, as of June 7, Lake Okeechobee stage was 9.86 feet NAVD88, down 0.04 feet from the previous week and 0.26 feet lower than a month earlier. Inflows averaged 200 cubic feet per second while outflows averaged 450 cfs, both down from the previous week. Moderate to high cyanobacteria potential was detected in Fisheating Bay and along the Indian Prairie northern shoreline. In the St. Lucie Estuary, inflow averaged 253 cfs with no releases from Lake Okeechobee, and salinity levels increased at all monitoring sites. In the Everglades, wood storks are abandoning nests systemwide, with nesting effort described as among the lowest in the past 30 years due to dry conditions.

🚂 Martin County Commissioner Proposes Fairgrounds Site for Brightline Station
Martin County Commission Vice Chair Ed Ciampi is pushing to move the planned Brightline station from downtown Stuart at 500 Southeast Flagler Avenue to the Martin County Fairgrounds at 2616 Southeast Dixie Highway. FECR opposes the downtown location because Coast Guard rules require the St. Lucie River railroad bridge be down when a train stops at the station, creating engineering conflicts. The fairgrounds site would eliminate those problems, Ciampi said, and the timing is ideal since the fairgrounds vacates after February 2027. The county is seeking nearly $70 million in federal grant money for an $87 million project, but the topic needs a full board vote before staff can explore the new location.
