Good Morning, Sunland
It's Friday! And I made an oops. This coming Sunday, I was excited to announce that I would be hosting a meet-the-candidates forum over at the Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce. But my timing got off, so I won't be able to host. The event is still happening though, and I want to make sure you know about it. This is a great opportunity to meet all the candidates that are running locally in one fell swoop. It's being put on by the League of Women Voters of St. Lucie County. The forum is on Sunday, October 4, from 4 to 6 PM. Please attend and let me know how it was.
👁️ Caught my eye: The Pineapple Playhouse opens See How They Run this week. It's a fast-paced British comedy filled with mistaken identities, secret affairs, and nonstop confusion. Set in a 1940s vicarage during wartime, the show spirals into chaos with borrowed clerical outfits, an escaped prisoner of war, and a suspicious parishioner. Performances run through October 18 at various times.

Call For A Free Quote🟠 Main Squeeze: Flock cameras in St. Lucie County just got more complicated and there is now a federal lawsuit in Port St. Lucie

We have been on this story for a while. Here is everything that happened this week in one place 👀.
First, Port St. Lucie. The fight over Flock cameras reached a fever pitch at Monday's city council meeting. Two things stood out.
One resident came to the podium and pointed out that when the city purchased this equipment back in 2022, their own procurement contract described it as public safety video surveillance, not license plate readers. The framing the city used to buy it and the framing they use to defend it are two different things.
Then another resident stepped up and announced there is now a federal lawsuit against Mayor Shannon Martin, the city and Flock. The arguments cover the Fourth Amendment for warrantless searches, the Second Amendment because the cameras track people traveling to and from gun ranges, and the Florida Constitution, which has stronger privacy protections than the federal one. The plaintiff also offered the city a consent decree right there in the public meeting, saying the city could settle this before it becomes a million dollar fight.
The council has still never actually voted on this program. The police chief issued a policy and a white paper but there has been no formal vote. One council member called for a complete pause. Another said the conversation should happen when the chief is in the room. The ordinance council asked for is still coming for a public vote and the lawsuit is still sitting in federal court.
The vendor is taking down 18 cameras, nine in county right of way and nine in state right of way. The deadline was September 30th.
Then St. Lucie County. According to WPTV, county staff found 13 license plate readers on county roads that have no permits at all. Nobody knows who put them there. The county's own communications director said they were surprised by how many were out there. The Sheriff's Office claimed three of them but says they are still trying to figure out why those were never permitted. The other ten remain unidentified.
County staff has taped notices on the cameras giving the owners 30 days to remove them. After that the county says it will either remove them or cover the lenses so they can no longer capture surveillance.
